Program Requirements
There are two sets of requirements. One is general program terms, and the second involves a family’s financial situation. Families must meet both program and financial terms to be eligible for Medicaid or CHIP.
- Be a U.S. citizen or meet certain immigration rules
- Be a resident of the state where the application is processed
- Have a Social Security number
Programs are also designed to accommodate certain groups.
STAR
Medicaid-managed,
no-cost healthcare coverage for:
- Low-income families
- Newborns
- Children
- Pregnant women
- Adults
STAR Kids
Medicaid-managed,
no-cost healthcare coverage for:
- Low-income families
- Children who have a disability
- Young adults, ages 20 and younger, who have a disability
CHIP
Low-cost healthcare coverage for those who do not qualify for Medicaid:
- Newborns
- Children up to 18 years old
- Prenatal care for pregnant women
