CORPUS CHRISTI – Karl Serrao, MD, FAAP, FCCM, has been named the Chief Medical Officer (CMO) for Driscoll Health Plan.
Dr. Serrao has served as Associate Medical Director for the Driscoll Health Plan STAR Kids program since its inception in 2016. STAR Kids serves children and young adults with special needs.
In his new role, Dr. Serrao will provide senior leadership to the Medical Directors and guidance of staff in support of all clinical, quality and utilization management activities of the Driscoll Health Plan. He will provide medical oversight of the credentialing, quality management, pharmacy and therapeutics, and complaints and appeals programs at DHP. Dr. Serrao will be part of DHP’s senior leadership team serving as professional medical resource in the plan’s operations.

Dr. Serrao has been a part of the Driscoll Health System for 20 years. Dr. Serrao went to medical school at the University of the West Indies, Kingston, Jamaica. He completed his pediatric residency in Pediatrics at Driscoll Children’s Hospital, and a fellowship in Pediatric Critical Care Medicine at Emory in Atlanta, Georgia. He is board certified in Pediatrics and Pediatric Critical Care Medicine. He is a Pediatric Intensivist and Clinical Professor of Anesthesiology at University of Texas Medical Branch, Galveston.
He has worked in the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) at Driscoll Children’s Hospital and served previously as Medical Chief of Staff, PICU Medical Director and ECMO Medical Director before joining Driscoll Health Plan. This May he will be finishing his MBA degree in Healthcare Management at the University of Massachusetts, Isenberg School of Management, Amherst, Massachusetts.
