CORPUS CHRISTI — Pediatrician Fred McCurdy, MD, PhD, MBA, CPE, FAAP, FACPE, has been named as medical director for the Driscoll Health Plan’s STAR Kids program, which is the first Medicaid managed care program created specifically for children and youth with disabilities.
As medical director, McCurdy will work with the health plan’s chief medical officer to oversee clinical decision-making activities and medical policy development as well as supervise the health plan’s STAR Kids clinical staff. He will also guide implementation and operations for the STAR Kids program.
“Dr. McCurdy has spent more than 40 years taking care of children as a pediatrician, a pediatric nephrologist, and as a professor teaching medical students, residents, as well as other physicians,” said Joe Cecil, Driscoll Health Plan's executive director, STAR Kids. “We are pleased to have him on board with us as we prepare to deliver healthcare to South Texas children with disabilities and to assist their families in helping them live happy, productive lives.”
He most recently held the position of associate medical officer/chief medical information officer and chief of pediatrics at Harlingen’s Su Clinica, a federally qualified health center serving 35,000 patients.
During his tenure at Su Clinica, Dr. McCurdy also served as professor of pediatrics at the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley School of Medicine, adjunct professor of pediatrics at the University of Texas–Pan American, and assistant designated institutional official/special assistant to the regional dean for academic special projects at The University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio. In these positions, he taught courses, consulted on curriculum, served as advisor to medical students, and directed medical residency programs in the Rio Grande Valley.
Prior to moving to the Rio Grande Valley, Dr. McCurdy was a pediatric department chairman, a residency program director, an associate dean for faculty development, an assistant dean for curriculum evaluation, and chairman of the reaccreditation steering committee for Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center. Also of note in Dr. McCurdy’s academic portfolio at Texas Tech is being awarded tenure as a medical educator. Prior to joining the faculty at Texas Tech, Dr. McCurdy was an associate professor at the University of Nebraska Medical Center and before that he spent 3 years in the U.S. Army and 22 years in the U.S. Air Force retiring at the rank of Colonel.
McCurdy holds an MBA from the University of Nebraska at Omaha, a medical degree from the University Of Nebraska Medical Center College Of Medicine, and a doctorate in immunology from the University Of Nebraska Medical Center. He is a Fellow of the American Academy of Pediatrics as well as a certified physician executive and a Fellow of the American Association for Physician Leadership.
